What to do when someone is in danger of getting electroshocked?
This article deals with what to do when a person is in danger of electricity. In most cases, a person who touches parts of an electrical installation that is under voltage cannot self-escape. The health and life of the person, in this case, depends fully on the prompt and correct actions of people around him providing assistance.
An electric shock is the event of someone getting in contact with high-voltage discharge. Muscle cramps, fractures, nerve paralysis, respiratory center failure and death can be the harsh consequences.
It is a common danger for electricians who are working with electrical installations day after day.
There are various correct methods of releasing the person from the electric current in different cases: touching the current-carrying parts on the ground, at an altitude, during the day or night, voltages up to or above 1000 volts are different scenarios. Knowledge of these situations allows you to act quickly and accurately.
Disconnection of the electrical installation
In case of contact with high-voltage parts, the person experiences an involuntary convulsive contraction of muscles – spasm. It can lead to failure of the respiratory and circulatory system. If the person holds the wire with his hands, his fingers are squeezed so tightly that it is impossible to free them from the wire. Not even someone else can open up the hand, let alone the person who is in a state of shock. Therefore, the first action should be the rapid disconnection of the electricity to the exact part that caused the incident. Disconnection can be done by a switch, a disconnecting device, from the fuse box or by unplugging the main connection.
If the person is getting electrocuted while working at some height, for example, fixing a light pole, releasing them from the current can cause them to fall. They will be unconscious and won’t hold on to anything on their own. It is necessary to take measures to prevent additional injuries.
Release of the victim without disconnecting the electrical installation
If there is no possibility of quick disconnection of the electricity, it is necessary to take measures to separate the victim from the current. When doing this, the person should not be touched with bare hands otherwise there will be 2 people in need of help. A nonconductive material should be used to get the person off from the source of electricity.
It is also possible to drag the person by their clothes if they considering they are not wet.
You can also isolate yourself by standing on a rubber carpet or a dry board and try to pull the victim with only one hand.
It would be easier to interrupt the action of the current by separating the victim from the ground by slipping a dry wood board or anything that is nonconductive.
If it is a wire, you can cut it with an axe or a tool that is secure to use.
For voltages above 1000 V, protectors should be used to help the victim.
